RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman's Course - Canal Training

This course was originally devised by our Senior Instructor of Willow Wren Training, Andy Newman, and developed by the RYA and British Waterways in response to demand from an ever-growing and more safety-conscious boating public. Andy also wrote the RYA Inland Waterways Handbook and the 2010 update.

Instructor briefing delegatesThis course assumes no prior knowledge but we recommend all delegates to read the RYA Inland Waterways Handbook before attending the course, (supplied free with course confirmation). The course is ideal for the first timer, yet the seasoned boater always goes away learning more.

It is a practical course with a minimum of theory and is not only an opportunity to learn new skills but also an enjoyable day out!

The course covers Deck Work, (knots etc), Boat Handling including reversing, Personal and Boat Safety, Engine Care, Locks, Bridges, Avoiding Collisions and care for the environment. See "Syllabus" for more detailed information.

Narrowboat springing off mooringThe course is normally carried out in one day and is based on the North Oxford Canal but it can be extended to two days with the second day held on the River Nene near Wellingborough. See our “River Training” for details.

The RYA course is certificated and successful delegates must reach a satisfactory standard before they can be issued with the RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman's Certificate.

The standard is achievable even for a novice. However, we all learn at different rates and if for some reason you don't reach the required level you will still receive the "Willow Wren Experience" certificate and we will do our best to find an economical way of giving you a second day.
